Triangles take over.

Withing my last drawings I did for my rolls royce brief I really liked the triangle patterns within them so I want to concentrate on that aspect more. So using triangles I created shapes of the foliage shape what I like is the clean cut look of these drawings they're very graphic. The sample I made from this though didn't come out the way that I thought it would. I layered some sheer fabric which I had dyed again in a marble effect on top of some green fabric and then hand stitched into the top. When I went to a tutorial someone commented that the dye looked very wishy washy and looking at it now I agree. So from now on I think I'm going to stop the dying for the rolls royce brief.

I made another sample based on these drawings but I wanted to use different techniques so I used a mixture of hand and machine embroidery. Again I'm not over keen on this sample either I haven really got into the flow for my rolls royce brief yet. I really like my drawings but I'm struggling to create good samples from them. What I do like about these though is the use of the triangle geometric pattern I want too really continue developing this idea and

Altfield.

logo

I am always being asked to think about where I would like to see my work the context of it, and its something that I have always struggled with trying envision my work somewhere. But I thought about stores/companys that I would love to some day work for or have my work In. Altfield is a high end leading resource for beautiful textiles with lines from all around the world for the purposes of residential and commercial interiors. I few designers that they represent include Moores & Giles, Westbury textiles and Weitzner.  I love to think that some day a company like Altfield would want to show case my work.

Inside Rolls Royce.

Beginning to research Rolls Royce I began by watching a documentary that was on channel 4 called inside Rolls Royce. It discussed its high end buyers and all of their optional bespoke features. Their newest venture for their 10 year anniversary they are bringing out a new limited edition called the wraith, it has been designed around the night sky when the first Rolls Royce was ever purchased.

The interior of the car has LED lights in ceiling representing the night sky and diamonds in the panels surrounding the interior. All of these elements are what Rolls Royce is about its about being the best it can be and be as luxurious as possible. I want to base the work Im creating for this assignment around this " Take the best that exists and make it better " which is the saying that Is in every Roll Royce dealer ship. Luxury, Success, Bespoke, Statement, Exclusive these are all words which are going to get me thinking about the materials, threads, designs that I would be using etc.

Layering samples.

For my own self written brief I want to work more with prepping background and then applying things over the top I really liked the look of painting dye onto fabric so I wanted to carry that on. This time I wanted to actually paint patterned leaves of jungle foliage onto the fabric. I then wanted to just add texture to the sample  I created two samples in this way. I feel that In the first image there is too much going on I feel without the free hand work in the right corner it would flow a lot better and also the printing foil I was hoping would blend in more as I feel it stands out a little too much. I much prefure the bottom image the stitch work is a lot more subtle.

I then wanted to reverse that idea so instead of first painting foliage onto the material I wanted to sew it in.  I dyed  the fabric in a kind of marbled effect and then using the free hand foot I sewed a leafy pattern over the top. This is probably my favorite sample to date for this unit I really like the way the stitching just blends in with the background.

Geometric designs

I started to think more about geometric designs that I could do for my rolls royce brief I still wanted to have a essence of the my jungle book theme, so I started by using shapes from my previous drawings and the filling them in with different geometric patterns I got the idea from looking at a few different artist studies. I really like these designs and I can envision them being used within car interiors.

I went on to develop these drawings I wanted to colour and depth to them I came up with idea of just cutting out triangle from colored tissue paper and layering them over the top. I got the idea for doing this after looking at some prints by Eloise Renoulf I love how all the triangles are all layered and then with different patterns over the top and in between its gives the print texture, this is also what I want to bring into my work texture.

Getting onto the ethos.

I had been thinking about other techniques that I could use for this unit and the ethos was a obvious choice for me after learning to use it in my last project I have been obsessed with using it again. So I thought of different designs that I could do with both briefs to stitch out. The first couple designs I did for my own self written brief I used the back grounds that had already prepped I wanted to make one of them camouflaged so that the actual stitch out wasn't to obvious. So the first design I did I stitched out a small leafy pattern on top of some printed fabric of a layered drawing from my sketch book. I really like the simplicity of this sample it came out a lot better than what i thought it would actually I was contemplating working into more perhaps with some hand stitch or something but I'm now thinking that I may leave it because I don't want to over complicate my designs.

The design above I really like the actual ethos stitch out part but the prepped background itself I'm not that keen on due to the yellow dye when I painted on the fabric with the dye at the beginning I really liked the way it looked. The colours on the fabric changed when it dye dried and the yellow I think looks very ill and I just didn't like the colour, I don't like how obvious this design is it just replicates exactly what I drew and of the plant it's self. It's also not a design that I can see being used within interior design.

Beginning to sample Rolls Royce.

I began thinking about how I could start sampling for my Rolls Royce brief using my initial drawings I started thinking about the different areas of the car that I would be deigning for,the head rest, inside the door, seat covers etc. I first thought about like a logo or monogram that might go on the head rests. I came up with a few ideas using the greens and yellows from my drawings.

One of my ideas was a tessellating triangle design, i was just thinking of different ways I could bring the colours jungle book theme into it with out using leafy shapes as well. I chose a triangle because I think it looks a bit like a leaf simplified. This was defiantly my favorite out of the three and got me thinking into using more geometric shapes and patterns for my rolls Royce brief. This is where my work begins to seperate off from one another although I started with the same primary research they have both now taken different paths and I can pursue each one in a different way.

First samples.

I decided at the beginning of this unit that I would work from the same set of drawings from my primary research and the later on definition between the two unit briefs. So based upon my drawings from the Eden project I began creating thinking about sampling. I immediately created a sample using black thread replicating a drawing, this was a rash and un thought out decision. In feed back session I was asked to think about prepping background before working straight onto the material and to actual think about the colours that I'm using and to generally put more thought into it rather than rushing straight into it with out thought.

So I thought a good place to start would be to get some of my drawings digitally printed and to then work from there. The images above are the drawings I chose to get digitally printed.

Initiual drawings

I wanted to get all my ideas down quickly so I began just doing some quick fine liner drawings from the photos that I took at the eden project. I wanted to make them quite simple and graphic to start with and to then go on and develop them at a later date. I like the simple and graphic appearance to them. Looking back on it now though it might have been a good idea to use a variety of different medias to perhaps do some pencil sketches maybe a collage etc. I'll keep that in mind for my following week.
